New Music Coming From the Pendulum Swings
Happy Rainy Labor Day, All!
I'm using this soggy day off to work on new orchestrations for fresh compositions from the compositional talent of Jason Tractenburg. We are gearing up for a very big show opening for Langhorn Slim at the Bowery Ballroom on Sept 24 (see my gigs page for deets)! We'll be playing all the hits of the P-Swings but also these fresh tunes orchestrated by yours truly, which I'm hard at work on as we speak (or as I type, I guess.... not really speaking here). I enjoy the creative process of working through these tunes due to the varied instrumentation (2 alto saxes, 2 tenor saxes, 2 trombones, and 2 trumpets, and rhythm section with accordion instead of piano) but also trying to finding characteristics that are a give and take from the vocals without covering our front-man up too much. What's even better is that the level of musicianship is so high in the group that I can bring just about anything on the printed page to rehearsal (when we have them, that is) and expect that the music will be read quite well on the first pass, or at least the second go around. Stay tuned to here samples of what I'm writing for the show!!!
